A living lab putting digital technologies at the service of agro-ecological transition within the territories of Occitanie

Growing food demand, climate-change impacts on harvests, production-related environmental impacts, declining farm incomes…..faced with these global changes, agriculture and the food sector have been asked to quickly re-invent themselves, and on a global scale.

Occitanie is home to an agriculture and food sector and a real economic driver:

  • number one employer in the region
  • number one European wine region in terms of appellation wines
  • second biggest agricultural region in France
  • leader in certified organic surface area
  • leading beekeeping region

It is highly committed to the Regional Pact for Sustainable Food in Occitanie, thus offering a dynamic environment that favours innovation. With one million euros from the Occitanie Region for Research fund, the Occitanum living lab was founded in this territory to develop and implement an innovation scheme, which aims to participate in the convergence and acceleration of agro-ecological transition based on digital technologies.

Ocitanum is an archipelago of 13 Living Labs deployed on different pedo-climatic and production sites across the Occitanie Region. These use-centred labs bring together all the local and regional stakeholders, including farmer communities, local authorities, agricultural development actors, AgTech firms, citizens as well as researchers, engineers, technicians, and academics, to develop innovative projects for a variety of agricultural systems (arboriculture, apiculture, livestock, field crops, viticulture and horticulture) and local food systems.
